The Power of the Sun

Last week in Southern Ontario our trees went from budding to full bloom with green foliage thanks to the power of the sun. As much as we enjoy the sun it’s important to keep in mind that it can also be dangerous. That same power that helps life to flourish, can also cause skin cancer and damage our eyes.

At Clearview Dental and Optometry, you have two professional services under one roof that can work with you to provide optimum sun protection for your eyes and mouth. Experience the convenience of both services at once.

Eye Protection

Even though the sun may be stronger in the summer, you should always protect your eyes from the sun. No matter your age, time of year, or location, your eyes need sun protection. Ultraviolet radiation from the sun is invisible, but it can lead to skin cancer in the sensitive skin around your eyes and on your eyelids. UV radiation can also cause serious eye conditions including cataracts, macular degeneration, keratitis (corneal sunburn), and conjunctival cancers.

Sun Protection from Clearview Optometry

According to The Skin Cancer Foundation of Canada, the first and best way to protect yourself from this type of sun damage is to wear sunglasses when ever you are out in the sun. You have an added incentive in that you get to look cool while being pro-active. The benefit of getting your shades from your optometrist (Dr. Neil Bajaj, OD) is that you will always get ones that optimise the level of sun protection. You don’t need prescription glasses to get top level care either. Dr. Bajaj recommends lenses that block 100% of UVA and UVB light. As well, your glasses should fit properly and always stay firmly in place.

In addition to beautiful glasses from Clearview Optometry the Cancer Foundation of Canada also suggests wearing a hat, using sunscreen (SPF 15 or higher) that is safe around your eyes, and spending more time in the shade. Also, don’t be fooled by cloudy days. The suns rays easily pass-through haze and clouds. As well, keep in mind that water and snow reflect the sun and it can be extra intense because of that.

Many people think that dentists are only concerned about your teeth and gums. Your dentist (Dr. Kiran Kapadia) is always concerned about your health, knowing that good dental health contributes to your overall health. Skin cancer affects the lips, which are very sensitive to ultraviolet light from the sun. Your lips host some of the thinnest layers of skin on your body. Dr. Kapadia recommends wearing lip balms or lipstick with SPF protection.

Interesting fact: Men are much more likely to develop skin cancer on their lips. Why? Women are more prone to wear lip protection in the form of lipstick. Therefore, don’t forget your lips when you go out in the sun.
